I develop interactive virtual environments to engage and support people with dementia. I am particularly interested in how presence, identity, memory and emotion can be expressed within such environments.
Investigations undertaken in the course of my PhD at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, has led me to consider how these platforms can be used therapeutically.
Prior to undertaking my PhD I was a senior researcher at Smart Services Cooperative Research Centre, following emerging trends in the digital world and collaborating with industry and government groups to develop new internet services around them.
My research is situated within a professional career in media and communications spanning some 20 years, as a television presenter and producer, documentary filmmaker, print journalist, radio broadcaster and theatre writer and performer. The Internet pulls these disparate media together, weaving them, amplifying them, building complex human and non-human networks in the process. I continue to be fascinated by its facility to collect, transmit and transform cultures and communities.
I wish to acknowledge the support of Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria and the Smart Services Cooperative Research Centre.
